I have a suggestion for improvement

Thanks! Since this is a beta version, we are really looking forward to your ideas on how to improve it. Click here to write your review.

Is eBuddy free?

eBuddy Mobile Messenger is free. But your mobile operator may charge you for using mobile internet. Check your price-plan to see what you pay per MB of data usage.

Data usage eBuddy.

It really depends on how actively you are chatting. Here's an indication on what a typical session with eBuddy Messenger could cost you:

20 minutes of intense chatting (about 50 lines): 0.06-0.08 MB
60 minutes online with little activity: 0.03-0.05 MB

This indication is for when your mobile operator supports 'socket connections'. Most mobile operators do so. If your operator doesn't support socket connections, the data usage may be more.

If I use eBuddy Mobile messenger, will I get a huge phone-bill?

Since we know that Mobile Internet can still be quite expensive, we have made sure that the data-usage is as low as possible. There are still many mobile operators that charge as much as €5.- ($7.-) per MB. Not really an incentive to start using mobile internet… Here is an example if you pay € 5 per MB: with the typical data usage this could cost you:
20 minutes of intense chatting (about 50 lines): € 0.30 - € 0.40
60 minutes online with little activity: € 0.15 - €0.25
This can be more if your mobile operator doesn't support 'socket connections'.
Either way: Check your price-plan to see what you pay per MB of data usage!

Downloading

How can I download eBuddy Mobile Messenger

Go to http://get.ebuddy.com in your mobile phone's browser and follow the instructions to download eBuddy Mobile Messenger.

How can I enter get.ebuddy.com in my mobile browser?

This is usually where you can enter a URL:

  • Sony Ericsson: Menu -> Internet -> right key -> Go to -> enter address-> enter get.ebuddy.com
  • Samsung: Menu -> Browser -> enter address (sometimes http:// or URL) -> enter get.ebuddy.com

How do I know if my mobile phone is supported?

The eBuddy Mobile Messenger will work with most phones that don't date back to the old days when phones still had antennas and black and white screens. If your phone is brand new, it might be the case that we have not added it to our database yet.

Here you can check if your phone is supported.

You can also just surf to http://get.ebuddy.com on your mobile phone. This will take you to the downloadpage. If your phone is recognised correctly and supported, you can immediately download the eBuddy Mobile Messenger. Alternatively, you will have to choose your phone brand and type. If your phone is not in the list, we don't support it yet.

Other phones that cannot use the eBuddy Mobile Messenger can always use our Lite Messenger at http://m.ebuddy.com.

I click on the download link, but nothing happens. I cannot connect.

Check if you can use mobile internet: surf to www.google.com with your mobile phone browser. If this is not possible, your mobile internet settings are not correct. Please contact your mobile operator to receive the correct settings. Often they are available on your operator's website.

Some phones do not support the download link and will only work if you type the URL http://get.ebuddy.com in your mobile browser and choose 'No success? Click here'.

Installing

I get a message saying eBuddy Mobile Messenger is not trusted. What is the risk?

The is a default message on your phone when you install an application. Do not worry, it is in not a security risk to your mobile phone or subscription.

Should I install eBuddy Mobile Messenger in the phone memory or on my memory card?

Some mobile phones let you choose to install applications on either the phone memory or an external memory card. It doesn’t matter which one you choose.

Where can I find the eBuddy Mobile Messenger after I have installed it?

This is very different per phone. You will find the eBuddy Mobile Messenger in one of the following locations:

  • Nokia: My Own or Applications
  • Sony Ericsson: Games or Applications
  • Samsung: Java World
  • Motorola: Games & Applications
  • LG: My Own
  • Windows Mobile: Start / Programs / Midlet Manager

I get a message saying "Memory Full".

If your memory is full, clear some space by erasing an application. Once there is sufficient space, try downloading eBuddy again.

Launching

Why do I need to sign up for an eBuddy ID?

We have an eBuddy ID, so you can sign in all your chat networks at once. After signing up for an eBuddy ID, you can add your chat accounts and log them in.

Plus, more exciting features will be added especially for eBuddy ID users soon!

After launching the eBuddy Mobile Messenger, filling out my details and clicking on ‘sign in’, it asks me to go online several times. Why is this?

The best way to connect to the mobile internet is via a 'socket connection'. This is what the eBuddy Mobile Messenger tries first. If this fails, it automatically tries to set up a HTTP connection, which is a bit slower, but still good.

After launching the eBuddy Mobile Messenger, filling out my details and clicking on ‘sign in’, I cannot connect. What’s wrong?

  • Make sure that you allow the application to go online, even if it asks you several times.
  • Apart from mobile internet settings, your phone may need separate JAVA settings. These are the same as the mobile internet settings but sometimes need to be entered separately. Click here for more instructions or check your phone manual on how to do this.
  • Unfortunately, there are mobile operators that do not believe in open mobile internet and shut down external applications. This is something we cannot influence.

I get a permission error message like "You are not authorized to access file system, check Java Application permission settings"

As a default security, some mobile phones do not allow JAVA clients (like the eBuddy Mobile Messenger) to access the internet at all. You can allow access; it is usually in the JAVA- Games-, or Application settings menu. It is best to check your phone manual on how to do this. On Nokia phones go into the application settings, sometimes called "Application Manager" and set network access to "ask first time only".

I get an "Allowed to use network" question every few seconds.

The eBuddy Mobile Messenger needs to check the internet regularly. Mobile phones ask for permission when an application enters the internet. You can disable this warning so that it only asks permission when you start it up. It is usually in the JAVA- Games-, or Application settings menu. It is best to check your phone manual on how to do this. On Nokia phones go into the application settings, sometimes called "Application Manager" and set network access to "ask first time only".

Select one of the contacts from your buddylist and press Chat. Send a message to start the conversation. Now press Conf. and Select one or more contacts that you want to add to this conversation and press Invite.

This will open the group conversation in a separate tab. If you have multiple conversations open, you might not see the new tab opening so make sure you scroll to the rightmost tab.

What happens if I get an incoming call?

Phone calls take precedence over eBuddy. If you are on eBuddy and a phone call comes through, your eBuddy session will be put on hold and you can continue with eBuddy after the call.

Can I keep eBuddy on all the time?

Yes. You will still receive all calls and text messages and eBuddy is designed to use minimal internet traffic from your operator.

Why can I not set all types of statuses?

Because you now can login to multiple networks, you can choose a status that can be displayed to all your buddies in each of the different networks.

Troubleshooting

I don't hear a sound when receiving a new message.

Make sure that sound is on, both in the eBuddy Mobile Messenger (on the main settings-page) and on your phone.

In some phones, you may need to need to allow sounds for Java applications in the Java settings menu.

My phone doesn't vibrate when I receive a new message.

That's correct. The phone only vibrates when you receive a Buzz.

My phone doesn't vibrate at all.

There are many phones that will not allow vibration from an external application. Most Nokia phones do not support vibration, even though it will vibrate when you get an incoming call. If your Motorola does not vibrate, go to the Java Settings and activate 'Global Buzzing'
